More than 500 people visited the Hilo Photography Club booth during the Hawaii County Fair in September.

Visitors to the booth were treated to wide range of photographic styles, ranging from landscape and nature to historical and documentary, in color and black and white. Images were displayed on multiple media, including paper, canvas and metal.

More than 300 of those booth visitors, young and old, took the opportunity to vote for their favorite image.

The five top images were displayed by Charles Wood, Vijay Karai and Steve Hurt.

Wood’s images, placing first, second and third, were dramatic views of lava and a nostalgic view of a canopied roadway in the Puna District. Karai’s fourth-place image was that of Tzatiki, a white tiger and crowd favorite at Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens. Hurt’s capture of a dramatic sunset was fifth in visitor popularity.

Digital camera technologies available in traditional camera formats, as well as smartphones and tablets, combined with social media, have democratized all forms of photography. Photographers wanting to enhance or share their photographic skills are invited to join the Hilo Photography Club.
