Public access to Maunakea lands will be closed later this month while the Department of Land and Natural Resources conducts animal-control activities.

On Oct. 25 and 26, access to Maunakea Forest Reserve, Maunakea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve, Palila Mitigation Lands, the Kaohe Game Management Area, and Maunakea Hunter Access Road will be restricted to the those without an animal salvage permit.

During those two days, the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife will conduct staff hunting and aerial shooting activities aimed at trapping and removing sheep and goats from the area.

The Maunakea Observatory Road will remain open.

Residents can obtain animal salvage permits by calling the Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s Waimea office at 887-6063 between Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.
