Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will reopen Mauna Loa Road to vehicles Monday, along with Mauna Loa Trail, the mountain summit and both high-altitude cabins.

The road, trail and the surrounding backcountry were closed May 11 along with the rest of the park because of the increased seismic activity of Kilauea.

All overnight backpacking and use of the Pu‘u ‘Ula‘ula cabin and Mauna Loa Summit cabin require permits. Permits can be obtained at the park’s backcountry permit office, which also reopens Monday.

Meanwhile, the park’s coastal backcountry trails and campsites will reopen Oct. 19.

All backpackers are advised to be adequately equipped, experienced in wilderness and high-altitude trekking and physically fit.
