Police arrest 24 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 17-23, police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident and one was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, seven; South Hilo, five; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 835 DUI arrests compared to 844 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.1 percent.

There have been 901 major accidents so far this year compared to 983 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.3 percent.

To date, there have been 23 official traffic fatalities, compared to 26 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 11.5 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
