Hanae “Harriet” Irie, 93, of Pepeekeo died Sept. 7 at a private care home. Born in Honokaa, she was retired from the former Orchids of Hawaii, worked for Carmelia Orchids and was a member of Honomu Henjoji Mission. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by sons, Glenn (Bonnie) Irie of Hilo, Norman (Karen) Irie of Pepeekeo and Gary Irie of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Faye Kamehaiku of Pahoa; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. John Henry Rutz, 78, of Kailua-Kona died Sept. 8 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born in Sacramento, Calif., he was a glazier for Central Pacific Glass Co. and member of Monday Night Mixed Bowling League. Celebration of life at a later date. Survived by companion, Carolyn Spencer of Kailua-Kona; daughter, Lehua (Doug) Lee of San Leandro, Calif.; sisters, Emma Brown of Sacramento, Calif., and Alice Schoner of Woodland, Calif.; three grandchildren; five nieces and nephews. Harry Travis “Boogie” Mendiola Smith, 32, of Keaau died Sept. 13 in Fort Worth, Texas. Born in Honolulu, he served 13 years in the U.S. Army. Memorial services 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 29) at Ballard Family Mortuary. Survived by wife, Robin Smith of Fort Worth; daughters, Aniya Jene, Sophia Marie, Emma Rose and Olivia Renae; father, Harry Smith of Hilo; mother, Carmen Mendiola of Guam; brothers, Abraxas Mendiola of Arizona and Joshua Smith of Keaau; sisters, Jolene Camacho of Guam, Pualani Smith, Luana Smith, Evalani Smith and Jennifer Smith of Keaau; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Linda Kehaulani Wallace, 76, of San Ramon, Calif., died Sept. 1 in San Ramon. Born in Hilo, she was a food service worker for San Ramon Valley School District, clerk for Met Life Support Division, support group office worker for Gettler Ryan and 1960 alumna of Hilo High School. Scattering of ashes in Hawaii at a later date. Survived by son, Gilbert (Karin) Wallace Jr. of San Ramon; daughter, Jeanne Marie (Greg) Gesino of Phoenix; brother, William Castro Jr. of Hilo; sisters, Patricia (George) Iranon of Honolulu, Joyce (Rufus) Sonognini of Hilo and Rachel (Frank) Toddre of Las Vegas; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Sumiko Yamamoto, 99, of Kalaoa died Sept. 11 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Olaa, she was retired from the former Mitchell Laundry and a member Hilo Meishoin, Hilo Hooganji Mission, Hilo Daijingu and Papaikou Pension Club. Private services held.
