Traffic delays in Hilo are expected next week as the Department of Public Works upgrades traffic signals at two locations.

On Wednesday and Thursday, workers will install wireless vehicle detection sensors in the pavement at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Hualalai Street, and at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Pauahi Street. Workers also will reprogram the traffic signals to operate with the sensors.

The sensors will be installed at all approaches to the intersection and are intended to better optimize traffic flow.

While the intersections will remain open, with off-duty police officers directing traffic, delays are to be expected while work is conducted between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
