Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo; six; Puna, five; South Kohala, three; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 761 DUI arrests compared to 757 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.5 percent.

There have been 827 major accidents so far this year compared to 898 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities, compared to 26 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 19.2 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
