Sports hall is accepting nominations until Sept. 28

The Big Island Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominees for its 2018 class, which will have an increased pool of candidates that includes pros.

“This year, the board of directors amended the qualification guidelines to include applicants who have gained sufficient local, area, state, national and international recognition and achievement in the amateur and professional ranks,” Big Island sports hall president Jerry Chang said in a release.

Previously, the hall’s requirements for induction were limited to nominees with “at least 20 years of volunteer involvement in athletics, either as a coach, teacher or mentor.”

All nominees must be at least 35 years of age on or before Dec. 31, and all applications must be received no later than Sept. 28 to be considered.

Applications can be picked up and dropped off or mailed to Ellsworth Custom Cycles, 969 Kinoole St., or call 935-5519 to request an application, which can also be downloaded at www.bishof.org.

Recipients will be inducted Nov. 4 with the unveiling of their photo on the BISHOF wall in the Prince Kuhio Plaza.

An awards luncheon will follow at noon at Nani Mau Gardens.
