Alexus Paglinawan was awarded the 2018 Rachel Leilani Gangwes Scholarship of $1,000. The scholarship is sponsored by the Hawaii Rise Foundation in partnership with Kealani Gangwes. Paglinawan, a 2018 graduate of Hilo High School, inspires to return home after attending college on the mainland and use his education and experiences to help decrease drug use in the Big Island community.
Keaukaha General Store named Kalama Kala‘i Morales as the recipient of its 2018 Holomua Scholarship of $1,000. Morales is a 2018 graduate of Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u and intends to return to Hilo to use his education in sports and medicine to support and improve the health and well-being of the Hilo community.
