2 teens learning to fly injured in small plane crash on Oahu
HONOLULU — Two teenagers learning to fly were injured after their small airplane crashed on Oahu, authorities said.
The 17-year-old girls were with a flight instructor aboard the single-engine plane that crashed Monday evening shortly after takeoff from the Dillingham Airfield in Mokuleia, police said.
One girl hit her head and the other, who was in the back seat, received some scratches. The teenagers were taken to a hospital in serious condition, said Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright. Instructor Victor Ponfiglio had minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
The 1969 Piper PA-28-140 owned by Alana Aviation crashed in property adjacent to the airfield, police said.
The pilot was practicing “touch-and-goes” maneuvers, said Ian Gregor, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
Minn. man sentenced in Texas for aggravated identity fraud
SHERMAN, Texas — A Minnesota man who authorities say falsely presented himself as a U.S. Navy pilot and defense analyst has been sentenced in Texas to 24 years in prison for stealing from various women he met online.
Forty-seven-year-old Derek Mylan Alldred was sentenced in federal court Wednesday after pleading guilty in December to mail fraud and aggravated identity fraud.
He also was ordered to pay about $255,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say a Dallas-area woman who was dating Alldred, who used the name Richard Tailor, filed a police report after becoming suspicious of him.
Investigators discovered he had charged more than $12,000 to her credit card.
They determined he had victimized at least 25 others in California, Hawaii, Minnesota and Nevada.
