Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of Aug. 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, seven; Puna, five; South Kohala, two; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 714 DUI arrests compared to 725 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.5 percent.

There have been 784 major accidents so far this year compared to 845 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.2 percent.

To date, there have been 20 official traffic fatalities fatalities, compared to 23 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 13 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
