Forecasters are tracking a new named storm in the Eastern Pacific that is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane.
As of 5 a.m. today, Tropical Storm Lane was 2,185 miles east-southeast of Hilo. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph with higher gusts and is moving west at 14 mph.
Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the storm’s center.
Lane is forecast to become a hurricane on Friday and could become a major hurricane on Saturday. It is also forecast to cross into the Central Pacific on Saturday as a major hurricane.
At this point, Lane poses no threat to land.
