Police arrest 21 for DUI

During the week of Aug. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo; seven; Kona, six; Puna, five; and South Kohala, three.

So far this year, there have been 691 DUI arrests compared to 705 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 762 major accidents so far this year compared to 825 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.6percent.

To date, there have been 20 official fatalities, compared to 21 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 4.8 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
