A man in his late 50s died late Saturday morning at Waipio Valley Beach, an apparent drowning, according to authorities.

According to a written police statement, four units, including a medical unit and a county helicopter answered the 11:58 a.m. alarm with the first unit arriving at 12:42 due to the remote location and relative inaccessibility.

When firefighters arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on the beach. They told officers the man was floating face down in about five feet of water and the bystanders didn’t know how long the man had been there.

The helicopter took the unresponsive man to an ambulance awaiting at Waipio Lookout.

The victim, who wasn’t identified, was pronounced dead at North Hawaii Community Hospital.
