Roger Irvin Vargas, 71, of Waimea died July 10 in a car crash on Saddle Road. Born in Long Beach, Calif., he was an entomology research scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center in Hilo who shared his knowledge of controlling fruit fly damage to agricultural products worldwide. Visitation 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 4) at Annunciation Catholic Church in Waimea. Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire; no flowers.
