Kauai utility seeks renewable energy developers

LIHUE, Kauai — Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is seeking to pay developers and eventually power subscribers for the renewable energy they generate and support.

The co-op sent out a request for proposals last week looking for developers who want to build a renewable energy facility.

The utility plans to launch a community-based renewable energy program, which would allow customers to receive compensation for participating in eligible renewable energy projects that provide electricity and electric services.

The program will be aimed at residents unable to install solar panels because of their properties’ locations, building types, access to the electric grid or other impediments, according to the utility.

Guam lawmakers want probe

HAGATNA, Guam — Guam lawmakers requested last week that the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives look into allegations of more than $14.5 million in unpaid cigarette taxes during the past three years by Mid Pacific Distributors. Authorities need to determine why the taxes weren’t paid, how the far back it goes and how the cigarettes were possibly diverted, said Guam Legislature Speaker Benjamin Cruz.

John T. Calvo, president and general manager of Mid Pac, said the allegations are baseless, noting the company reported the discrepancies to the Guam Department of Revenue and Taxation.
