The Hawaii Fire Department was monitoring brush fires on the south side of the fissure 8 lava channel near Noni Farms Road on Saturday.

A Hawaiian Volcano Observatory field crew reported spillovers occurring throughout the channel and fluctuations in the channel level, county Civil Defense said in a media update.

County Managing Director Wil Okabe said a couple of homes in the evacuation area might be threatened but the fires were inaccessible to the Fire Department. It was unclear how many acres were burned.

Lava continued to enter the ocean at Ahalanui and had not advanced closer to the Pohoiki boat ramp.

The edge of the flow field remained 500 feet away from the ramp as of Saturday.

The disaster recovery center is moving to the Pahoa Community Center on Monday.
