‘Amazing’

Regarding the July 19 Commentary page: Wow! If both the editorial cartoon and George Will are calling President Trump as they (and the rest of us with any sense) see him, maybe there is still hope for the midterm elections!

Amazing to see, not to mention refreshing.

A sad day

July 17, 2018, was a very sad day for our Big Island community. We lost a real hero in one senseless act of violence committed by a career criminal with a lengthy record.

Officer Bronson Kaimana Kaliloa was a fine officer, devoted husband, father, son and friend, and he didn’t deserve to be gunned down the way he was. This is a tremendous loss of a hero for our Big Island community and the Puna district he served in.

It brings to light, and to the public’s attention, the tremendous danger our patrol officers face in the Puna district on a daily basis.

They are understaffed and underfinanced for the task they have been entrusted with, highlighting the need for our government officials to find resources to help our struggling police department.

I understand the crisis our government faces with the tremendous toll this lava flow has taken on our budget, but I pray that we can find some way to adequately finance our first responders that are entrusted with public safety.

Let’s also fight for stricter penalties to keep career criminals behind bars to prevent our officers from being harmed and from feeling like they are fighting a losing battle.

And let’s be a community that is pro-police in every way and give honor where honor is due.

God bless our police department, and God bless Officer Kaliloa’s family!

Let’s do everything we can to show our love and support for our police department in its darkest hour.
