It wasn’t too long ago that the Kona Dolphins were an afterthought when it came to medal counts at state swimming meets.

With an influx of talent, matters have certainly changed.

Maile Lawson was the high point finisher in the ages 15-16 division at the Hawaii age group long course championships on Oahu last weekend, grabbing four gold medals, while Shea Tsuha grabbed two golds in the oldest division.

Lawson, formerly of Kona Aquatics, placed first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1 minute, 12:39 seconds), 200 breast (2:35:20), 200 IM (2:23:22) and 200 butterfly (2:22:09). Tsuha, who used to swim for Hilo Aquatic Club, claimed the 200 breast (2:45:48) and 100 breast (1:14:58) in the 17-18 division.

Tsuha was a double BIIF gold medalist for Hilo Hilo in 2017, but she’s set to attend Kealakehe for her senior season.

The Big Island’s biggest winner on the boys side was Academy Swim Club’s Kanoa Birdsall, who took home three freestyle golds: 1,500 (17:19.78), 800 (9:12.08) and the 400 (4:24.78). Birdsall was the third-highest point scorer in the 13-14 division.

Masau Lee, 10, delivered two victories for Hilo Aquatic, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:30.34) and 200 individual medley (2:58.85).

Another double gold winner was 16-year-old Brock Imonen, who captured the 800 and 1,500 free (8:46.98, 17:00.52). Imonen, who won the BIIF 500 free final last season for Hawaii Prep, was swimming unattached for Oahu’s Kamehameha Swim Club.

Warrior Aquatic Club’s Mina Poppas, 17, claimed the 400 free in 4:42.07, and the Dolphins’ Ku‘ulei Patterson, 16, won the 100 free (59.86).

Also deserving a gold star of sorts was Hawaii Island Swim Club’s ’olili’Uwelaakawahin Wise. The 10-year-old recorded five top-three finishes and was the third in her division.

With Lawson and Tsuha technically swimming attached, Kona Aquatic led the island team race, finishing seventh. Hilo Aquatic was 11th with the Dolphins 13th and Academy 15. As usual, Kamehameha (2,376) dominated, dwarfing runner-up Punahou (1017.5).

Before school starts, many swimmers’ next stop is the mainland.

Lawson, an HPA senior, will be attending the junior nationals in Irvine, California, July 31-Aug. 4, while Tsuha is among the swimmers heading to Futures event in Santa Clara, California, Aug. 2-5. Also in tap in August in a West Zone meet.
