Hawaii Electric Light Co. said Tuesday that the temporary closure of a portion of Kawailani Street in Hilo will be extended by two nights to allow crews to safely remove utility poles.

The road will be closed for construction from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. tonight until Friday (July 20) and again on July 24 and 26.

During this period, Kawailani Street between Kapualani Street and Naniakea Street will be open to local traffic only.

To reduce impacts to traffic, crews are working at night to install 12 new utility poles as part of the county’s Kawailani Street Improvement Project.

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes along Puainako Street and Haihai Street. Residents are advised to drive with caution in the construction area. No power outages are expected while the work is being performed.
