Uchida cards 86 at U.S. Girls Junior

A handful of weeks shy of her sophomore year, Waiakea High’s Lacey Uchida left herself in a tough position at the U.S. Girls Junior.

Teeing off at Poppy Hills Golf Course by the famed coastal stretch in Pebble Beach, Calif., Uchida went birdie-less during a 15-over 86 that left her tied for 146th in the 156-player field.

The top 64 low scores after Tuesday’s second round advance to match play.

Special Olympics golf benefit

Special Olympics East Hawaii will hold its 11th annual golf tournament Aug. 26 with a new slant: Golf a Volcano.

In an effort to support Volcano Village as well, the benefit will be held at Volcano Golf and Country Club, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The $150 entry fee covers golf, a cart, Thai lunch, and 19th-hole awards and prizes. Special Olympians play for free.

The deadline to enter is Aug. 17.

Richardson swim sign-up

The annual Richardson Rough Water Swim will be held at 8 a.m. July 29 at Richardson Ocean Park.

Early registration fee of $20 must be received by Friday. Afterward, a $40 sign-up fee will be accepted until 7 a.m. the day of race.

Waiakea seeks three coaches

Waiakea High school athletics is accepting applications for the following head coaching positions:

• Boys and girls air riflery (applications due Friday)

• Girls varsity soccer (July 27)

• Boys varsity baseball (July 27)

Applications can be picked up at Waiakea’s main office during business hours. All coaches pass a background check before being hired

Waiakea air riflery sign-ups

All incoming and returning Waiakea students interested in trying out for the air riflery team must email whsairriflery@gmail.com by July 23 to receive important information about participation requirements, equipment needs and the tryout schedule.

A current physical and parent consent form must be submitted in order to participate and school equipment is very limited, so emailing the above address as soon as possible is recommended.

Top shots

Maui’s Arthur Shepard (86) was the winner during a M&M compact sporting clay shoot (100 targets) held earlier this month. Mike Munnerlyn (84) and Earl Higa (82) rounded out the top three.

M&M will host a national sporting class association state shoot July 27-29 at the county trap and skeet range. Public recreational shooting will not be available, but spectators are welcome.
