Gilbert “Gil” Tomas, 76, of Hilo died July 6 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired Hawaii Police Department detective/sergeant, member of Kaumana Drive Baptist Church, coached the Waiakea High School girls basketball team to state titles in 1985 and 1986, member, coach and an original organizer of Hawaii Island Police Activities League (HIPAL), and youth basketball coach.
