Praise for ruling

I am so glad to see the court find in favor of the lesbian couple denied a room (Tribune-Herald, July 12) based on the “religious beliefs” of the bed and breakfast owner.

Being a Christian myself, the owner’s action is not an example of following the teachings of Christ.

Jesus went out of his way to find the “despised” among the people; he was roundly criticized for associating with pub owners, tax collectors and prostitutes, among others. The physician came to minister (and show love) to the sick — “they that be whole need not a physician.”

Our mission, as Christians, is to live the Gospel by showing love and compassion to our fellow men, the opposite of judgment and ostracism.

My personal belief about gay marriage does not give me the authority, in this glorious free country, to deny the right to patronize a business (even my own) based on a person’s beliefs or lifestyle.

What if the tables were turned? Could a Muslim, Jewish or gay owner of a business refuse to serve a Christian customer? Are we to use a litmus test to determine if someone is “worthy” of our attention and service?

What would Jesus do?

Show some respect

The article on the front page of the Sunday, July 8, Tribune-Herald regarding “debate dodgers” was very disturbing to me.

I was particularly disappointed that for the second election in a row (2016 and 2018), Richard Onishi has not chosen to attend election debates that are hosted at Cooper Center in Volcano Village.

Is he afraid to face opponents, or is he so sure he will be elected by his cronies that he does not feel the need to answer questions from his constituents in District 3?

I will vote for someone who will give me the respect of attending a debate and answering questions regarding their ideas and what they stand for.
