Police arrest 30 for DUI

During the week of July 2-8, which includes the Independence Day holiday, Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna and South Hilo, 10 each; Kona, seven; Ka‘u, ttwo; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 614 DUI arrests compared to 607 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.2 percent.

There have been 664 major accidents so far this year compared to 710 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities, compared to 20 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 25 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide police said.
