Practice bon dance at Taishoji temple
Taishoji Soto Mission will host bon dance practices from 7-8:30 p.m. today and July 24 and 31.
Join members for fellowship, and brush up on dances performed around Hilo.
The first bon dances took place on the plantations where immigrants lived and labored. Through the years, bon dance has become a community event in which all are welcome to participate.
Taishoji’s bon dance is from 7-10:30 p.m. Aug. 4. The temple is located at 275 Kinoole St. in Hilo.
KS alumni luau canceled
The ninth annual Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association-East Hawaii Region luau scheduled for Saturday on the Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus has been canceled.
“Due to the uncertainty of the length of volcanic activity and climatic conditions continue to be a problem, our concern is for the safety and welfare of those who may be considering attending this year’s luau,” said alumni President Tom Chun.
All ticket sales will be refunded.
The association looks forward to the return of the KSAA-EHR scholarship luau at the KS Hawaii campus on July 13, 2019.

Hospice, palliative care help needed
Hawaii Care Choices, formerly Hospice of Hilo, provider of palliative, hospice and bereavement care to East Hawaii, is looking to add to its volunteer team and will conduct a training session this month for members of the community interested in giving a few hours a week to uplift others.
Volunteers provide services that can only be provided by volunteers, giving caregivers a much-needed break or time to run errands. New volunteers can choose to provide services such as companionship, respite, transportation, light housework, yardwork or administrative support.
Veterans interested in spending time with a fellow veteran to provide companionship and reflective conversations about time serving our country are especially encouraged to become part of Hawaii Care Choices’ new Veterans to Veterans volunteer program.
Training will include a 10-hour online course to be completed prior to meeting from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. July 25 for the final day of instruction.
Interested trainees should visit www.hawaiicarechoices/volunteer to complete an online application and then call volunteer manager Jeanette Mochida at 969-1733 to arrange a quick mandatory pretraining interview no later than July 20.
