2 homes destroyed, 4 damaged in fire

HONOLULU — Two homes were destroyed and four others damaged following a brush fire on Maui thought to have been caused by fireworks.

The Maui Fire Department said a witness heard children playing with fireworks in Kihei just before the fire began Wednesday. The fire department says remnants of fireworks were found in the area.

A preliminary damage assessment of $1 million was made, but that could still change.

The Fire Department said a firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment after sustaining an injury.

A shelter was opened for displaced residents in need.

Fishing boat runs aground near Honolulu airport

HONOLULU — A fishing boat ran aground early Wednesday near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. The Coast Guard is investigating.

The 83-foot boat, called the Sea Goddess, ran aground about 150 yards from the airport.

The Coast Guard said six people were on board. There were no injuries, and no reports of released pollutants.

However, the Coast Guard said the incident was reported to state agencies for pollution and environmental assessments.

The Coast Guard said the incident occurred under clear skies, with 4-foot seas and 15 mph winds.
