Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of June 25-July 1, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna and South Hilo, six each; South Kohala, three; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 584 DUI arrests compared with 573 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.9 percent.

There have been 637 major accidents so far this year compared to 694 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent.

To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared with 20 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
