Police have identified a 49-year-old man they think shot two people, killing one, Saturday afternoon on Painted Church Road in Honaunau.

The suspect, Brian Lee Smith of Honaunau, is hospitalized with a gunshot wound, police said. He has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder and is hospitalized off-island, police said.

The shooting, just before 3 p.m. killed 42-year-old Thomas Ballesteros Jr. of no permanent address. An autopsy will be conducted this week, police said.

Police have not identified the other man injured but said he, like Smith, is hospitalized with gunshot injures and is expected to recover.
