Hoop Dreams second on Kauai

Rico Handy and Kiai Apele provided Hoop Dreams with a few thrills this past weekend, helping the Big Island club team reach the championship game of the Kauai Hoops Classic.

After a 4-0 march in pool play, Handy’s buzzer-beater gave Hoop Dreams a dramatic 38-37 semifinal win over the Kahului Falcons in the semifinals.

In the varsity championships game, Apele scored 13 points and Handy added eight, but Hoops Dreams fell to the Honolulu Lions 54-44.

On Friday, Hoop Dreams defeated Kauai’s Shaka Hoops 49-30 and Maui’s Top Notch 47-32. On Saturday, Hoop Dreams upended Oahu’s Roundball Academy 49-30 and Lakeside 48-26.

Aslo on the team are Branden Pagala, Izayah Chartrand, Jerek Prudencio, Kaupena Yasso and Will Soares, Rico Handy.

Hawaii Island Hoops camp

Registration is ongoing for the Hawaii Island Hoops college prep camp, which will be held from noon to 6 p.m. July 31-Aug. 3 at Hawaii Prep Academy.

According to a release, coaches from the NCAA, NAIA and junior college levels will be among the instructors.

The fee is $250 and includes a Nike reversible jersey and camp luau.

Hoops training in Kailua-Kona

Club Pa’akai advance basketball training is set for 9 a.m. July 14 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona.

This is a free year-round program for boys and girls ages 10-17 that is open to experienced players only

According to a release, training in Kohala, Honokaa and Hilo is coming soon.

Top shots

The Big Island Trap Club will hold an Amateur Trapshooting Association state shoot from Friday-Sunday at the county trap and skeet range.

During the club’s May shoot, Dana Okazaki was the top gun in both 100-target events, with a 95 in singles and 89 in handicap.

During the club’s April shoot, participants shot 50 targets in singles and doubles and 100 in handicap events.

Top shooters were:

Singles: Neil Arakaki, 47

Doubles: Dana Okazaki, 44

Handicap: Ronald Nakamura, 94
