Accomplished photographers are frequently asked “what camera did you use to take that picture?” There is a false assumption by many that cameras alone ensure a perfect photograph. The reality is far different.

The most expensive camera in the world in the hands of a neophyte will usually yield disappointing results. The truth is, as the old saying among photographers goes, “the best camera is the one you have with you.”

Inexpensive point and shoot cameras have largely been replaced by advanced camera systems in smart phones.

Allison Yano, the guest presenter at the Hilo Photography Club on Wednesday, is an accomplished photographer who shoots with an iPhone.

Yano’s fine art portfolio, captured with his iPhone, illustrates what can be achieved with today’s smart phone camera technology, in the hands of an expert photographer. He has an extraordinary eye for capturing beauty.

He will discuss the tools available for editing images in the iPhone and various techniques involved. Following the discussion of tools and techniques, he will present a slide show.

After a short break Yano will demonstrate the use of some of the tools and answer questions from the audience.

The Hilo Photography Club meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Kamana Senior Center, 127 Kamana St., Hilo. Admission is free and light refreshments are served at intermission.

Club activities include monthly meetings, photography field trips and workshops. Memberships are $15 per year.
