Hilo Broncos take turn at bat

The newest edition of the Hilo Bronco All-Stars will try to maintain Hilo’s strong legacy at the state PONY Baseball Tournament for ages 11-12, which starts Saturday on Oahu.

Hilo teams have won states four of the past five years, reaching the title game in every tournament dating back to 2011.

This year’s team is coached by Lee Iwata, Brandon Gonzalez and Mark Kitagawa.

Kiwanis Keiki Day is Saturday

Highlighting community health and awareness, the Kiwanis Keiki Day will be held Saturday at Waiakea High.

Among the activities are a T-ball clinic featuring the Nobu Yamauchi RBI League from 9-10 a.m. and a Waiakea football clinic featuring simple drills from 10:30-11:15 a.m.

The keiki day runs 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the football stadium.

Sunrise Athletics will hold a free fun run/obstacle course combo. Sunrise event check-in is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and registration forms and information can be downloaded at www.leaguelineup.com/sunrise-athletics.

5K/family fun day Saturday

The Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce is holding a 5K and family fun day Saturday at Wong Stadium.

Registration and packet pickup runs from 3-6 p.m. Friday at Wong and 6:30-7:45 a.m. Saturday at Wong. The run/walk is at 8 a.m. and the fun day runs until 3 p.m.

Junior Lifeguard program is set

The County of Hawaii, Fire Department Ocean Safety, Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii Lifeguard Association will host four junior lifeguard sessions at Kahaluu and Hapuna Beach Park.

The program is open to any male and female between the ages of 12-17. The course will feature ocean safety and beach rescue skills.

Topics will include an introductory to water safety, first aid, CPR and surf rescue techniques.

Applicants must have swimming skills and be able to swim 100 yards continuously at 100 percent effort.

Sessions will take place June 18-20, 25-29, July 9-13 and 16-20.

Each session will go from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free to all registered participants.

Registration is limited to 30 students per session on a first-come, first-serve basis.
