During the week of May 28-June 3, police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, seven; Kona, six; South Hilo; four; and Ka‘u, two.

It’s the first time in recent memory Puna has topped the weekly islandwide DUI arrest list.

At least three of those arrests took place at the “Four Corners” intersection of Highways 137 and 132 in Kapoho, which had a well-publicized police checkpoint. The intersection has since been overrun by lava from Kilauea volcano.

So far this year, there have been 493 DUI arrests compared to 506 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6 percent.

There have been 551 major accidents so far this year compared to 604 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.8 percent.

To date, there have been 15 official fatalities, compared to 19 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 21.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
