Mason misses Open opportunity

Former UH-Hilo golfer Nick Mason shot a 150 in a 36-hole sectional for the U.S. Open in Rockville, Md., failing in his bid to reach the national championship for the time.

With four Open spots available in the 53-player field, Mason (76-74) finished 36th.

Also failing to qualify from Hawaii were Oahu’s Jared Sawada, who slumped to an 80 in his second 18 after a 67 in a Daly City, Calif., sectional; Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa, who came in at 157 in Rosewell, Ga.; and Maui amateur Chris Stutts, who shot a 160 in Jupiter, Fla..

The U.S. Open is June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills (N.Y.).

• At the U.S. Women’s Open last weekend, Waiakea grad Britney Yada failed to qualify, coming in at 16-over.

“Obviously it was a tough week for me, ” Yada said in a email to the Tribune-Herald. I will turn things around, it is just a matter of time!”

HIA/Heineken softball tourney

Hawaiian Isle Athletics will hold its annual, HIA/Heineken slow pitch softball tournament from July 27-29 at Wong Stadium and Walter Victor complex.

Waiakea seeks riflery coach

Waiakea High is accepting applications for an air riflery head coach.

Applications can be picked up from the school’s main office during regular business hours, and they are due by June 15.

Hilo High School is accepting applications for the varsity baseball head coach and boys/girls air riflery head coach for the 2018-19 season. All interested applicants can pick up an application form at the schools main office. Deadline to submit is Friday, June 29.

Sunrise Athletics free run June 16

The Sunrise Athletics free Keiki Fun Run/Obstacle Course Combo at the Annual Kiwanis Keiki Day will be held Saturday, June 16. Check-in is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and registration forms and information can be downloaded at www.leaguelineup.com/sunrise-athletics.

There will also be ongoing activities presented by the Kiwanis Organization after the run.

Taroma is tops

Hilo’s Kiah Taroma had the fastest car on the track last month as the Big Island Auto Club opened its racing season at Hilo Drag Strip.

While Taroma reached 174 MPHs and finished in 7.82 seconds, Hilo’s Clayton Branco (14.9 seconds/90 MPH) prevailed in open bracker racing in a Ford SUV, and Pahoa’s Ron Dugon (17.9/77).

The auto club’s next races are June 23-24 Hilo Drag Strip.
