Volcano Art Center’s 2018 Hula Voices series continues at 7 p.m. Thursday with special guest kumu hula Manaiakalani Kalua and moderator Desiree Moana Cruz.

Each month, Hula Voices presents an engaging, intimate talk-story session with Hawaii Island’s hula practitioners as they share their hula genealogy, traditions, protocols and experiences. These free, educational offerings occur regularly on the first Thursday of each month.

While Hawaii Volcanoes National Park remains closed, these programs will take place at the Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center in Volcano Village.

Born and raised in Keaukaha, Kalua graduated from Kamehameha School in 1996 and received a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian studies in 2002 from Ka Haka ‘Ula ‘o Ke‘elikolani at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He has been an instructor at Hawaii Community College in the Hawaiian Life Styles program since 2003.

Kalua’s halau, Akaunu, opened in 2012 and is closely tied to the traditions of Unukupukupu and Halau O Kekuhi.

Hula Voices is supported in part by a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hawaii County Department of Research and Development and individual funding from members of the Volcano Art Center’s ohana.
