In this case, the golf course grass might well have been greener on the other side.
After four years at Kamehameha and one season at UH-Hilo, Shantel Antonio continues to prosper at Concordia University-Oregon, making her coach wonder what Antonio has in store for her senior season.
During her junior season, Antonio was named first-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the Division II Cavaliers, who claimed their first league championship in late April. She averaged 78.7 in her 16 rounds of golf with seven top-ten finishes, including a tie for fourth at the GNAC championships. Antonio also made the honor roll (GPA of 3.5 or higher).
In 2017, Antonio made the GNAC’s second team and was the league’s newcomer of the year. She was the BIIF runner-up in 2015 for the Warriors.
“Shantel has continued to work extremely hard at improving and it’s no surprise that she has achieved this first-team accomplishment,” coach Kim Dehning said in a release. “It is a true testament to her dedication. I’m so proud of her and can’t wait to see what she will accomplish in her senior season.”
Here is a look at how other Big Islanders fared during the golf season:
• Hawaii sophomore Trevor Hirata (Waiakea) played in five tournaments and averaged 77.1 strokes for his 15 rounds.
• UH Hilo sophomore Preston-Lee Ching (Kamehameha) average score over eight tournaments was 78.30, boosted by a 70 at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate.
• UH-Hilo sophomore Keely Kitamura (Waiakea) averaged 88.23 over nine tournaments.
• Also for the Vulcans, senior Andi Igawa (Waiakea) and freshman Anela Dalton (Keaau) each took redshirts.
