Police have arrested a 61-year-old Leilani Estates man for an alleged Tuesday afternoon shooting incident in the lava-ravaged subdivision.

Police responded to a 12:21 report of gunshots fired near the intersection of Kahukai and Makamae streets. A 32-year-old Leilani Estates man told police he and several acquaintances were surveying the area of his former home that had been inundated by lava when a man rolled up in a pickup truck, got out and allegedly assaulted the victim, then fired several shots at the group, demanding that they immediately leave the area.

No one was injured by gunfire, and the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the assault.

Police found 61-year-old John Hubbard nearby and took him into custody without incident. He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continue to investigate a possible charge of first-degree reckless endangering.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
