Hilo’s Kevin Hayashi put himself in position to make the cut Friday at the Senior PGA Championship before going birdie-less on the back nine in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Competing in his first PGA Tour Champions major since 2016, Hayashi wound up with a 4-over 75 in the second round and finished at 4-over 146.

An eagle on the par-5 No. 9 got him back to even par after 27 holes at Harbor Shores, but Hayashi, the club pro at Hilo Municipal Golf Course, fell into trouble with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11.

The cutline was 143 and a group of golfers tied for 65th.

Kevin Sutherland (66) and Scott McCarron shared the lead at 8-under.

Also missing the cut was Stuart Smith, the Reno, Neveda, club pro who was tied for the lead after the first round.

He carded an 83 in the second round.

During a 71 on Thursday, Hayashi played the last 12 holes at 2-under.

In 2016, Hayashi competed at the Senior PGA (9-over), also at Harbor Shores, as well as the U.S. Senior Open (21-over), missing the cut both times.
