State removes left turn onto Hana Highway
KAHULUI, Maui — State Department of Transportation officials announced this week that the left-turn option at Hansen Road at Hana Highway in Kahului, Maui, is being removed as a safety measure.
During the past five years, officials said, nine major accidents have occurred, with a substantial number being from motorists traveling eastbound on Hana Highway colliding with motorists making a left turn from Hansen Road on to the highway.
In an effort to increase safety, the left-turn option will be removed from the intersection, and left-turning motorists will instead be directed to Hookele Street, where there is a signal.
Work is expected to be completed this week. Motorists are advised to plan for delays and use caution when driving through the work areas as well as after the traffic pattern changes.
California man dies after being pulled from ocean
MANELE BAY, Lanai — Emergency responders on Tuesday were unable to revive a 61-year-old California man who was pulled unconscious from waters off a beach in Manele Bay, Lanai.
The Maui Fire Department said in a news release that firefighters were called at 12:28 p.m. to Hulopoe Beach. When they arrived at 12:42 p.m., they found bystanders performing CPR on the man.
Firefighters continued lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived, shortly thereafter.
The man, who was visiting from Escondido, Calif., could not be resuscitated.
He was swimming at the beach, and was part of a Maui tour group that was visiting Lanai.
A nearby swimmer noticed the man floating unresponsive and pulled him to shore.
Some in Guam feel shaking from quake off coast
HAGATNA, Guam — A magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck Tuesday near the Mariana Trench off Guam.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor struck 47 miles southeast of Inarajan Village, Guam. It had a depth of 9.69 miles.
Preliminary data showed the quake to be a magnitude of 6.0, but it was later downgraded to 5.6.
According to the USGS website, there were no immediate reports of damage but some people on Guam reported feeling weak shaking.
USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu said the earthquake is related to subduction in the Mariana Trench. He said that’s when two tectonic plates collide and one goes under the other.
