Waiakea girls volleyball meet-and-greet

Waiakea girls volleyball will be hosting a meet and greet potluck with the coaching staff from noon-2 p.m. Sunday at Waiakea Gym.

All girls grades 9-12 can preregister for Waiakea’s voluntary summer strengthening and conditioning program, including incoming freshman.

Please bring your favorite potluck item to share.

This meeting will give all athlete’s an opportunity to meet the coaching staff as well as ask questions in regards to the summer conditioning program.

The strengthening and conditioning program will be begin Monday at Waiakea Gym with this tentative schedule (all athlete’s must have a current physical to participate):

Monday-Wednesday, 4-6 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday, 3:30-5:30 p.m., weightlifting;

Mandatory tryouts will be held 3-6 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3, with check-in everyday at 2:30 p.m.

Players must be present everyday for tryouts, which are closed to the public.

Players should wear volleyball attire; tights, navy blue or grey shirt and hair should be pulled back in a ponytail with an extra shirt/jacket and a water bottle.

Special Olympics golf season set

The Special Olympics East Hawaii golf season will begin June 15, with practices every Friday at Naniloa Golf Course in what is the program’s 11th season.

A golf tournament will be held Aug. 26th.

All returning and new athletes are encouraged to sign up at www.golftreasures.net.

Basketball camp set for Waimea

The DNA Basketball Academy will hold a summer camp from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 1-3 at Waimea District Park for boys and girls ages 9-18.

According to its website, “If basketball is in your DNA, this is the place to be.”

The camp will feature skill development stations, plyometric training, leadership development, 5-on-5 games and player evaluation and former Honokaa High and UH-Hilo coach Daphne Homna is among the clinicians.

The fee is $75.

Grants for Vuls seniors

Gaspar and Kawano

UH-Hilo softball players Mari Kawano and Bailey Gaspar have received an NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award, an award granted to student-athletes with financial assistance to complete their degree they have exhausted their athletic eligibility. Kawano and Gaspar will complete their studies in the coming year in their majors of business administration.

The NCAA grants approximately 100 degree completion awards each year in Division II.

“It’s a great honor for Bailey and Mari to receive this award,” said UH Hilo Senior Woman Administrator and Compliance Officer Roxanne Levenson, who nominated them. “They are both very deserving of this scholarship, which help them take the final steps in completing their work towards their degrees.”
