If you are a caregiver for an adult family member or friend, you’re attend the Family Caregiver Respite Fun Day from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Hawaii Island Adult Care.

Lani Wiegert of Hawaii Care Choices (formerly Hospice of Hilo) will be on hand to share information about the new services HCC is offering. She will discuss how we are all learning to live longer and with a better quality of life.

“We are fortunate,” Wiegert says, “because we have an organization, such as HCC, to provide hospice services here in the Hilo area for those of us in need. But there are many things we can do for ourselves and our loved ones at different stages in the aging process.

“I look forward to discussing how to handle some of the basic challenges, such as grocery shopping, preparing meals and managing your finances and medications.”

HIAC will be providing a delicious, healthy continental brunch — with a side of Zumba. Yoli Nakamura will be serving up her famous Zumba routine.

Another program favorite includes the therapeutic touch, hand and foot, back and shoulder massages. For those who choose to bring their adult loved one, HIAC also provides free day care during the program and until 3:30 p.m.

There is a $10 registration fee but no worries, scholarships are available. HIAC is located at 34 Rainbow Drive in Hilo. To reserve your place, call 961-3747, ext. 101. For more information, visit hawaiiislandadultcare.org.

In addition to its respite day, HIAC also hosts a caregiver support group that will meet from 9-10:30 a.m. today led by Patrick Toal from the Big Island chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Free care for your loved one is offered while you attend the support group.
