Hilo Trollers results
The Laurie Marie 7 with captain Brian Catriz and angler Ben Marantan landed the largest ahi and fish, a 172.3-pounder, at the first Hilo Trollers tournament of the year on April 8.
The largest Ono was 41.2 pounds on the Kawaipilialoha by captain Charles Lewis and angler Nathan Orevillo.
The second largest fish was an 83-pound ahi on the Kawaipilialoha. The crew also hooked a mahi mahi, and that gave them three different flag fish and put them in the lead for the coveted Fisherman of the year award.
The largest mahi mahi was 23.2 pounds on the Honey Girl by captain Gill Kualii and angler Leia DeMello.
Both the Honey Girl and Laurie Marie 7 landed two flag fish so they are not far behind in the competition for Fisherman of the year.
The Grand Champion award is only given when a boat has two or more different flag fish, and it is given for total weight. That award went to the Laurie Marie 7 for a combined total weight of 210.9 pounds.
The gift certificate donated by S. Tokunaga Store for the first qualifying fish of the tournament went to Kay LC 5 with captain Aric Okuda for a 17.9 pound Ono. The gift certificate donated by J. Hara Store for the largest aku went to the Noe’ula with captain Randall Frias for a 12.5-pound aku.
The Trollers will continue to accept food donations for the Food Basket at check-in. The Trollers will also continue the annual Opala Award for the boat that collects the most ocean trash and recycles it.
The next tournament is scheduled for Sunday, May 6, weather permitting. Entry forms are due at the two tackle stores noted above or at Boat House Hawaii by 4 p.m. on Friday.

Vulcans earn awards
UH-Hilo golfer Jared Kinoshita was named to the PacWest first team for the first time, the conference announced Thursday.
The junior, from Bakersfield, Calif., just missed qualifying for the NCAA Division II super regional tournament. He placed fifth at the PacWest championships in Arizona and made the all-tourney team. He had a season average of 74.12 and a season-low of 69.
Kinoshita is the first Vul to earn All-PacWest first team honors since Dalen Yamauchi in 2015.
For tennis, UHH junior Vaclav Slezak earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award this year. The rookie of the year award went to Vul freshman Alessandro Giulato, who is 17-2 in singles and 16-3 in doubles with Slezak.
UHH coach Tina McDermott was named West region ITA Wilson coach of the year. Her assistant Sean McDermott was named ITA assistant of the year.
The Vul women repeated with the ITA West region community service award.
Kohala High seeks coaches for 2018-19
Kohala is seeking varsity head coaches for the 2018-19 school year for the following sports: girls volleyball, boys volleyball, girls soccer, boys soccer, track and field, and baseball.
Applications may be picked up at the Kohala High main office. Deadline is Friday, May 11.
