Cinco de Mayo dance at Elks Lodge

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo starting at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Hilo Elks Lodge with live music by local jazz diva Lou Ann Gurney and her band, Jazz Mele.

Dance tunes will include swing, Latin, jazz standards, boogie woogie and jump blues. All ages are welcome; kids 12 and younger are free. General admission is on a sliding scale, $10-$20; pay what’s right for you. If you bring a pupu to share, admission is only $5. No free passes for this event.

There will be a beginner-friendly swing dance lesson from 7-7:30 p.m. The band will play from 7:30-10 p.m. Jazz Mele consists of vocalist Lou Ann Gurney, Amy Lee on saxophone, Diana Webb on bass, Alex Czerny on piano and drummer John Robinson.

The Hilo Elks Lodge is located at 150 Kinoole St. It is a nonsmoking facility and there is ample parking in the back, off Ululani Street. For more information, call 935-1717.

Gallery hosting student exhibition

Puna Gallery and Gift Emporium is presenting the Puna Youth STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and Artwork Exhibition for the weekend of Pahoa’s Second Saturday, May 13-15.

Portions of the store’s gallery will feature student work that will be sold via silent auction. Proceeds will be split between the featured student and their school art programs and classes.

School community council seats open

Mountain View Elementary School is seeking community members to join its school community council for the 2018-19 school year.

Interested volunteers are asked to fill out an application at the school administration office by May 10.

Rummage sale to benefit ministries

Hilo Coast United Church of Christ will be having its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. May 12 at 28-1630 Old Mamalahoa Highway in Honomu.

Clothing for all ages is only 25 cents. Other rummage sale bargains include furniture, household items, kitchenware, plants and more.

Hilo Coast UCC has been hosting this popular event for more than 25 years as a service to the community. Proceeds support ministries locally and abroad.

Kohala High class turning 50

The Kohala High School class of 1968 is gathering for its 50th-year reunion June 6-9 with golf, bamboo fishing and hanafuda tournaments, as well as two dinner events.
