It’s a long shot, but it’s still a possibility for UH-Hilo’s baseball team.

Dylan Spain overcame a rocky first inning Friday, and RJ Romo belted four of 14 hits for the Vulcans, who pushed past Holy Names 10-9 in Alameda, Calif., to win their third game in a row.

Romo started a go-ahead rally in fifth with a double and drove in a run in the sixth with a single, scoring three runs, Kila Zuttermeister added three hits, and Jonathan Segovia collected a two-run single among his two hits. Phillip Steering was 2 for 3 and walked three times.

At 17-23 and with eight games remaining, UHH (13-19 Pacific West Conference) still has a chance at a .500 season. The Vuls go for the sweep of the Hawks (10-34, 6-28) in a doubleheader Saturday and the rest of their remaining games are against Hawaii Pacific.

Spain gave up four runs on three hits in the first inning, giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead. But the 6-foot-6 sophomore settled in, allowing only three hits the next five innings.

Spain (3-6) yielded five runs (three earned), three walks and fanned four.

Drew Ichikawa, Deric Valoroso Jr. and John Kea each allowed a run in relief. Kea, who inherited a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, got five outs for his eighth save.

Helped by six Hawks errors, only half of UH-Hilo runs were earned.
