Taylor Patrick, Jared Kinoshita and UH-Hilo were on the move during the second round at the Pacific West Conference golf championships in Surprise, Ariz.
Getting consistency from its four scorers for the second consecutive day, the Vulcans moved into a tie for third place behind Patrick and Kinoshita, who each shot even-par 72 and were tied for 10th overall at 2-over.
Evan Merrier improved his first-round score by 10 shots and turned in a 73, and Warren Miller came in at 76 as UHH was 11-over heading into Wednesday’s final round, 12 strokes behind first-place Dixie State.
Kamehameha graduate Preston-Lee Ching, who led UHH with a 73 on Monday, carded a 77.
Kinoshita made two birdies and two bogeys, while Patrick’s scorecard was more adventuresome. The sophomore from Canada made his third and fourth birdie on Nos. 13 and 14 to get 1-under for the tournament, but he bogeyed the final three holes.
Dixie State’s Spencer Wallace took a two-shot after a 67 put him at 2-under.
• In the women’s competition, Dillyn Sakai shot 87 for the second consecutive round and was 30-over, while Kimberly Katayama (89), Keely Kitamura (90) and Kiri Oshiri (91) were all 34-over.
The Vuls remained in last place at 708 – first-place Cal Baptist was at 580.
One day after shooting a PacWest-record 64, Academy of Art’s Anahi Servin fired a 72, but her lead was trimmed to three shots after Cal Baptist’s Erica Wang shot a 66 – which would have been the PacWest record before Servin’s handiwork Monday.
