Dogs deserve better

I have visited Hilo many, many times. I love the people and your beautiful town.

There is something so near and dear to my heart and that is my love for animals. I am appalled by how many people leave their dogs tied up in their fenced-in yard. There is no interaction from the owner. The dogs are left sad and alone. Not a pat on the head or even a look at the dog.

People, this is animal cruelty. You might not be hitting the dog, but ignoring the dog is just as bad.

If you are doing this, I urge you to please give your dog to someone who will give it a better life. And if you see this happening, report it!

Vote on salaries

Real property and gas tax increases. Water bill rate increases. They all seem to justify county salary increases. What other increases does the county have in mind?

It’s like the Joneses keeping up with the neighbor.

It’s about time to make a county charter change to have the taxpayer decide on county salary increases at the ballot box. County salary increases must be clearly justified and for the taxpayer to decide, too.

Septic solution

The county wants to close all cesspools but can’t accommodate the hauling of septic sewage by private businesses in Kona. If converting all cesspools to septic tanks is the goal, something in government has to get better.

The typical governmental response to the problem was, “We don’t have enough workers.” How about considering making systemic changes that facilitate pumping instead of encumbering private businesses?

In the interim, perhaps here’s a solution. People pooping in big lava tubes could offer to be an emergency, short-notice deposit site at the same cost the county charges septic haulers. Maybe that would get things moving (pun intended).
