Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of April 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, nine; Puna and Kona, seven each; South Kohala, two; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 329 DUI arrests compared with 365 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent.

There have been 368 major accidents so far this year compared to 389 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.

To date, there have been seven official traffic fatalities this year, the same as at this time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
