Kamehameha business race April 22

The Kamehameha Canoe Club’s 35th annual Business canoe race is scheduled for Sunday, April 22 and will feature six-person canoe races for fun and bragging rights.

Women, men, and mixed teams will compete in business, intermediate, or open divisions. Special mixed teens and senior mixed masters divisions will also compete.

PacWest honors for pair of Vulcans

UH-Hilo senior pitcher Cyanne Fernandez has been named the PacWest pitcher of the week. She threw a complete-game 2-1 nine-inning gem over Chaminade on Saturday.

She scattered seven hits and allowed an unearned run. It was her fifth outing with no earned runs allowed this year. Fernandez (15-5) has a 2.60 ERA on the season.

UHH pitcher Travis Burleson has been named the PacWest freshman of the week. He threw eight innings in a 6-2 win over Concordia on Friday.

He allowed six hits and no walks and struck out 11, the most by a Vul pitcher this season.

Four from UH on Big West team

Hawaii senior libero Tui Tuileta, junior setter Joe Worsley, junior outside hitter Stijn van Tilburg and sophomore middle Patrick Gasman were named to the inaugural All-Big West men’s volleyball team, the conference announced on Monday.

Rainbow Warrior sophomore Rado Parapunov was named to the second team and defender Gage Worsley was on the all-freshman team.

Hawaii (18-7, 6-4 Big West) is seeded second in this week’s conference tournament, which will be played at Long Beach State.

The Warriors have a bye and will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal match between third-seeded UC Irvine and UC San Diego on Friday in the semifinals.
