What started at approximately 6:25 p.m. Friday night at Wong Stadium didn’t end until roughly 24 hours later at Kamehameha.
In between, UH-Hilo and Concordia found a little time for sleep.
The teams fit in four games during rain-induced marathon saga of college baseball, splitting their time right down the middle after the Eagles closed a 3-0, six-inning victory Saturday night as darkness crept in. Kamehameha’s turf field was called to duty after Wong Stadium was drenched Friday.
The Vulcans (14-20, 10 Pacific West Conference) won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 6-4, rallying to score the final six runs and getting two RBIs apiece from Jonathan Segovia and Phillip Steering.
UH-Hilo played three games Saturday after the ‘nightcap’ of Friday’s doubleheader crept into Saturday morning.
Some highlights of the ordeal:
• Freshman Travis Burleson (3-3) struck out a career-high 11 and Steering hit his seventh home run, setting a single season school record, as the Vuls won 6-2 to close the first doubleheader – the second game didn’t start 10:30 p.m. Friday.
In eight innings, Burleson allowed just six hits and two runs and didn’t walk a batter.
• UHH reliever John Kea pitched in three of the four games, finishing up for Burleson and then nailing down his fifth save Saturday afternoon after Cole Nakachi (3-0) delivered 3 2/3 innings of stellar innings in relief of Kyle Alcorn.
• Segovia and Edo Sakata collected a hit in each game.
Segovia was 2 for 4 with a two-run double in first of the four games, a 10-7 win by the Eagles (14-24, 11-17). That contest started two and a half hours late and featured a 25-minute rain delay.
• Reese Kato, a senior who has missed almost the entire season with an injury, collected three hits in the 6-4 win.
