Bernard Gomes Sr., 90, of Hilo died April 9 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a retired production manager for the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, U.S. Army veteran and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and American Legion. Visitation 5-6 p.m. Monday (April 16) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 6 p.m. Casual attire; flowers and lei welcome. Graveside service 9 a.m. Tuesday (April 17) at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Survived by wife, Irene M. Gomes of Hilo; sons, Bernard Gomes Jr. of Seattle and Joseph (Elna) Gomes of Hilo; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; cousins, nieces and nephews. Charmaine Rose Lorenzo, 60, of Pittsburg, Calif., died March 26 in Antioch, Calif. Born in Pahala, she owned and operated Hale Kupa‘a School, taught at Hale O Kamali‘i Montessori School, Hale Aloha Nazarene School, Waters of Life (Na Wai Ola) Public Charter School, Boys and Girls Club of Hilo, Goodwill Industries – Ole I Ka Hana, Hilo Community School for Adults, Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy and Paxen After-School All-Stars, attended Malia Puka O Kalani and St. Joseph Catholic churches, was a Hilo High School Class of 1975 alumna and graduated from Chaminade University in early childhood education and Montessori. Gathering of family and friends noon Saturday, April 22, at Wailoa State Recreation Area. Survived by daughter, Maemie H. Ho‘okupumekealoha (Harry Obregon) Lorenzo; parents, Arthur and Elizabeth Lorenzo; sisters, Kathleen (Glenn) Babayan and Kimberlee Lorenzo of Keaau; brothers, Arthur Joey (Trish) Lorenzo of Lihue, Kauai, and Clifford Lorenzo of Waimea; a hanai grandson.

Charles Edwin Nahooikaika, 89, of Pahoa died April 4 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Operating Engineers Local 3. Celebration of life at a later date. Survived by wife, Roberta “Dodo” Holt Nahooikaika of Pahoa; children, Charlene (Craig) Savio of Seattle, Charles (Olita) Nahooikaika of Sumter, S.C., Gaynel Nahooikaika of Honolulu, Gilbert (Michele) Nahooikaika of Las Vegas and Candi (Michael) Borge of Waianae, Oahu; sisters, Pauline (Willibrord) Tallett of Oahu and Aileen Chow and Shirley Stillman of Hilo; grandson/caregiver, Clint Borge of Pahoa; 17 grandchildren; great-grandchildren. Clement “Clem” Edward Nelson, 89, of Hilo died March 5 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was retired from the state Department of Health, a musician and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mazie Toshiko Oshita, 90, of Pahoa died March 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired salesperson for the former Ah Mai Store. Private family services held. Survived by husband, Eichi Oshita of Pahoa; sons, Crescent (Susan) Oshita of Pearl City, Oahu, Scott Oshita of California, Blaine Oshita of Hawaii Kai, Oahu, and Blake (Wendy) Oshita of Kapahulu, Oahu; sister, Collette (Stanley) Mitsuyuki of Aiea, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Margie Yoshioka and Haruko Yoshioka of Honolulu; three granddaughters; nieces and nephews. Kiyoshi Takata, 93, of Laupahoehoe, formerly of Pupukea, Oahu, died March 17 in Hilo. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired electronic technician, former self-defense instructor at Brigham Young University-Hawaii and black-belt aikido instructor. Visitation 5-5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 19) at Mililani Mortuary Makai Chapel on Oahu. Memorial service at 5:30 p.m.. Burial 11:30 a.m. Friday (April 20) at Mililani Memorial Park. Casual attire.
