Arson case opened in Puna house fire, another ‘under investigation’

A first-degree arson investigation has been opened into a house fire early Wednesday evening in Tiki Gardens subdivision near Pahoa, according to a police log, and an early Wednesday morning house fire, in Hawaiian Shores subdivision, is listed as “under investigation” by the Hawaii Fire Department.

A written Fire Department statement says eight units responded to a 5:12 p.m. alarm of the fire on King Kamehameha Boulevard in the Tiki Gardens subdivision off Ainaloa Boulevard. A Hawaii Electric Light Co. truck also responded for live wire control.

The first unit arrived at 5:23 p.m. to find the unoccupied single-family structure and a four-door sedan parked in the carport engulfed in flames.

The fire was reported under control at 5:33 p.m. and extinguished at 6:45 p.m.

Damage was estimated at about $90,000, with an estimated $25,000 of property saved.

No injuries were reported.

The Hawaiian Shores fire, at the corner of Opihi Street and Kahakai Boulevard, was reported at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday, with nine units responding.

The first unit arrived at 12:56 a.m. to find a pickup truck, the garage and the kitchen of the one-story home in flames.

The fire was reported under control at 1:05 a.m. and extinguished at 1:15 a.m.

Losses and property saved are both listed as “undetermined at this time.”

No one was home and no injuries were reported.
